Curriki – Curriculum Development Web 2.0 Style

This month’s issue of MultiMedia & Internet @ Schools (May 2009) featured Curriki,  a curriculum development tool that is growing in popularity and, consequently, in its value to educators.

Curriki is a free, open source application that provides a structured, customizable approach to knowledge sharing and collaborative document management in curriculum development and lesson planning.   While Curriki is not built in a traditional wiki format, as the name might imply, its features (like a traditional wiki) encourage collaboration and best practices in developing curriculum and lessons.

In a typical collaborative situation, teachers might set a meeting to share hard copies of lesson plans and resources to align their curriculum; in other situations, they might share the same documents and resources via email.  In Curriki,  however, teachers can form groups and collaborate and share resources online–resources that are accessible anywhere, anytime.  Additionally, teachers can search the Curriki database of over 25,000 resources for examples that can be borrowed to create derivative works.

Other benefits of using Curriki include:

* increased collaboration, ability to network with other educators
* align lessons or units
* easily make changes, add lessons, resources
* create derivative works
* engage teachers in being creative and putting their best lessons in writing
* save money on resources, even textbooks
